The area in general is called Les Portes du Soleil (The gates of the sun) which lies between Lake Leman/Geneva and the Mont Blanc range of mountains. One can ski sans frontiers - (without frontiers) - using a unique ski-pass covering 12 ski- Stations, some of the most important in Europe and world wide and offering 650 Km. of connecting pistes with 224 mechanical lifts.

Briancon is the principal town of the Brianconnaise, located at the head of the valley of Serre Chevalier, a summer winter resort several miles long which includes 13 picturesque villages such as Chantemerle, Villeneuve, and Monetier les Bains.
Briancon is a good base for skiing from 1350 to 2800 meters. Cross country as well as snowboarding and downhill skiing.

Height of the village: 6,890 ft. max. lifts 11,500 ft. An efficient, modern, purpose-built ski resort situated in a huge snow bowl below the Grande Motte glacier range, only a few miles from Val d'Isere with which it shares many of the finest runs. It is built above the tree line and is bare in aspect.
It is divided into 3 sub-resorts of which the largest and oldest LAC DE TIGNES. LAVACHET is a newer extension just above and linked by gondola, while VAL CLARET is the newest and highest, about 1 mile further up past the lake. A 10 minute bus service links all three parts during the day.
Lac de Tignes and Val Claret have ski-schools with easy nursery slopes and lifts which are free for learners, but intermediate and advanced skiers are best catered for with an enormous range of on and off-piste runs and summer skiing available on the glaciers. Lac has a sports centre and limited apres-ski facilities and there are a few essential shops in each part of the resort. There are many restaurants. Nearly all the hotels are at Lac de Tignes. Most open all winter, and July and August.

The best French ski resort near the Italian border and connects to Tignes, 5 miles distant. L'Espace Killy is the name of the interlinked ski area which also has a summer ski area on the glacier. Formerly a small mountain village which was entirely remodelled in natural materials, mostly stone, for the 1992 Olympics. It lies at the head of the River Isere Valley, in a flat valley floor and is encircled by glacier-topped mountains. The altitude of the village is 6,070 ft. It is well exposed for the sun and all the skiing to the south on mostly north-facing slopes.
At La Daille, a recent off-shoot 1 mile along the road to Tignes is a new funicular and claimed to be the world's fastest, transporting skiers into the mountain in only 4 minutes for runs back down to Val d'Isere and to Tignes.
There are facilities for all grades but it is superb for the more advanced. The village has an enormous variety of ski/mountain gear shops selling every known make and many restaurants, bars, discos, etc. and an ice-rink.
Access by RAIL: SNCF railway Station to Bourg-St-Maurice where coaches meet trains for transfer to Val D'Isere. The bus takes 1hr. 10 mins. By CAR: motorway to Albertville then dual carriage way to Moutiers
By AIR: Geneva-Cointrin or Lyon-Satolas airports (then 3 hours by road).

The highest ski resort in Europe - altitude 7,550 ft. maximum lifts 11,700 ft. The TROIS VALLEES (3 valleys),is dominated by 5 glaciers and is made up of four resorts: Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Meribel and Courchevel (reputedly one of the smartest in the French Alps).
VAL THORENS is the newest of the group, built during the last 18 years and purpose built for skiers with 227 slopes. The layout is compact and well thought out, with the main Peclet gondola Station and Plein Sud chairlift just below the village and the ski school and nursery slopes right in the centre; the latter incorporates free drag lifts which are useful to skiers returning to hotels at the end of the day or visiting shopping arcades as the village, being built mainly on the hillside, can be tiring to walk around.
Apres-ski and alternative sports facilities i.e. the Pierre Barthes Club with tennis facilities, swimming pool and ice rink; the Marielle Goitschel Club looks after children from 3 years.
HOW TO ARRIVE: BY AIR: Approx. 3.75 hours Geneva Cointrin Airport, then bus or Lyon-Satolas (190 Km.) or Chambery (115 Km.), then by bus.
BY RAIL: Train Station at Moutiers (40 Km.),frequent shuttle buses to the resort.
BY ROAD: Motorway A6 to Lyon, then A43 to Albertville, express road Moutiers then D91 up the valley to Val Thorens.
SHUTTLE BUS: FREE in VT/every 10 minutes.
